One partition, many divisions? Ethnicities and education in Pakistan

چکیده
If historical shocks influence educational outcomes, how long does the effect last, and it differ among ethnic groups? This study answers these questions by exploiting experiment of partition—that is splitting British Raj into India Pakistan—and presenting a theoretical model that explains trade-offs such shock uncovers for different groups have to decide between assimilation through education maintaining their specificity. We use rounds Pakistan social living standard measurement (PSLM) survey analyze outcomes grandchildren partition (i.e., whose grandparents were born during partition). show scar from long-lasting, as present generation still under its influence. More importantly, our results reveal adaptation strategies cultural in run.
